Guidelines for Freelance Writers

Midwest Home features stories on beautiful and functional spaces inside and outside Minnesota homes. We’re always looking for examples of fine design in area homes, remodels, rooms, landscapes, and gardens. We encourage freelancers to contact us with story ideas about stylish homes, outstanding or unusual gardens, current shelter issues, design trends, entertaining, and gardening ideas. Review any recent issue of the magazine to get a sense of content possibilities, tone, and length.
 

Content Guidelines

All Midwest Home stories must have strong Minnesota connections.

 

Savvy Host

This is a standing department that features seasonal entertaining, entertaining trends, and interesting people who entertain well. Each Savvy Host includes 5-7 recipes. Some examples: home chocolate truffle-making for Valentine’s Day; how to use your garden’s seasonal bounty; tips for grilling on wood planks. Word count: Approximately 600; PHOTOS/ART: Assigned (an inviting spread of dishes created from the featured recipes)

 

Features

Features on a variety of topics related to home and garden design in Minnesota. We’re interested in stories that promise useful information to readers: how to improve the curb appeal of your home, decorate your mantel, chose wall colors you’ll love, or pet-proof your landscape. We’re also looking for exceptional architect-designed houses, renovations, and additions; extraordinary landscapes and gardens; and interior design and building trend stories with Minnesota sources. Examples: architect-designed house with stunning views of the Minnesota River; old-world Italian garden in St. Paul; using reclaimed wood to create a unique patina in high-end homes—and saving natural resources at the same time; and making the most of limited space for a kitchen or bath. Word count: 750-1000 words, and detailed captions; PHOTOS/ART: Assigned

 

Queries

A query letter should precede submission of a manuscript. Describe the proposed piece in a paragraph or two, the perspective or angle you’d like to cover, and include photos if appropriate. If this is your first query to us, it’s helpful if you enclose your resume and a few writing samples.
